Have you always been an active person - did you play sports in your youth?
I used to ride horses, play tennis, badminton, and I took Tae Kwon Do, so I was pretty active
What made you get into fitness/bodybuilding/figure/bikini (whichever is applicable) competition?
My first trainer approached me in the gym, and he told me that he thought I would do well as a bodybuilder. I dieted for Muscle Beach for my first show, and I was hooked. Loved it.
Have you competed in other categories as well?
Yes, I competed in Master Figure on 2007...the one and only time I'll ever compete in Figure. I felt completely out of place.
How has the sport impacted your life?
I'm already very driven, but this sport forces you to be organized and focused, so it's definitely helped in that aspect, especially with work. I haven't been approached for any events.
Who do you look up to in the industry and who has helped you along the way?
I loved shooting with David Ford, as he shot my first photoshoot, and he was super easy to work with. Gene X, and Simon Lau were also very easy to work with. I've been incredibly lucky, as all of my trainers have been amazing. I trained with Bobby Tang (2004), IFBB pro Raejha Douziech (2004- 2007), Rob Chalifoux (National bodybuilder 2007 - 2008), and since 2008, I've been training with IFBB pro Zoa Linsey.
Favorite foods for dieting?
Egg whites, fish and brown basmati rice
For cheating?
Depends on my mood...I love Asian food, probably because I'm Dutch Indonesian, so most Asian food is what I crave. That, and trail mix, and Kashi Go Lean Crunch cereal (too good, lol)
Are there any sports supplements that you cannot live without?
I love blue raspberry glutamine from PVL...I go through a ton of it, and I'm addicted to BioX chocolate peanut butter isolate...favorite protein powder by far.
Are you sponsored by a company?
none...hopefully one day
What is a typical day for you when prepping for a show?
Wake up at 6am, take my vitamins, grab a coffee, do cardio, come home, shower and get ready for work, pack my food (5 meals), eat breakfast on the way out the door, finish work, train, eat my last meal, prep my food for the next day, and hopefully grab a decent 5 hours of sleep.
What do you find the most difficult about this sport?
The lack of understanding most people have when it comes to female bodybuilders, or bodybuilding in general. Too many opinions, but none of them are willing to ask us what we really go through for this sport. That, and the ignorant comments people can make when they see your vascularity.
Do you have any tips or advice to give to ladies who are thinking of trying out the sport?
I'm so passionate about this sport, and I love the connection that you have with other athletes. This is a sport for the dedicated and disciplined. You need to fight your cravings, your moods, your exhaustion...it teaches you to be strong, and I love it.
When will we next see you on stage?
2011!!!!
Can you provide us a workout routine for a week?
My training changes a lot, but typically, legs, back and calves, rest day, delts and abs, arms, rest day, hamstrings and calves.
