I think I just learned something....
This whole leg bone connected to the hip bone, hip bone connected to the back bone, back bone connected to the shoulder bone thing is pretty brilliant in its simplicity. I bitch about my crappy shoulders, then realize my upper spine is completely stiff. Separately I notice that I get sciatica from a tight piriformis. Then I tweak my rectus femoris in my quad... Hm I've got tight hip flexors and tight ham strings
Then it starts to come together, years of chair sitting have made me think I'm standing straight when I've got my hips tilted down and my ass out like a two dollar hooker. Even on my best lifting days I've been misusing my levers. Lot's of work to do in undoing a bunch of bad habits but I'm pretty stoked. There's some PR's to be found in the deadlift/squat without actually having to get any stronger and quite a few injuries to be left behind.
Exposing mobility work in the context of actually lifting stuff better has turned a light on for me that I didn't know was there. The only mobility type work I've ever done was rehab/prehab type shit to save my rotator cuff. I had never looked at it in the context of improved mechanics = heavier lifts.
Kelly Starett is FANTASTIC! He practices what he preaches. The man is strong as sh!t and has the mobility and flexibility of a gymnast.
He has a book coming out on April 23rd called "How to Become a Supple Leopard". He calls his "followers" leopards.
His website http://www.mobilitywod.com
is brilliant.
Now I know some of you may knock him because he's a Crossfit guy----Just learn from him and you WILL become a better and stronger deadlifter, squatter, presser and puller while at the same time reducing the chance of injury. BONUS!! (ps---Crossfitters who have strong and sensible coaching will develop bodies and strength and that anyone would be impressed at.)
Just don't watch his video on icing. He is very good at his specialty but when he steps outside he is just as gullible as the rest of us.
Crossfitters who don't do Crossfit(tm) but are instead coached by world class strength and conditioning coaches tend to get very strong.
The 2 day seminar that it takes to get a crossfit(tm) certification to open a gym and the random wods are a scam.
